(Single-Person Household)

Although both women’s and men’s shoes are lined up at the entrance of this temporary housing unit, only a single woman is living here.
My parents and I had been living together, but they have been missing ever since the tsunami attack; my grandmother passed away suddenly three weeks after the disaster.
A man from another prefecture was hired to work on the bathtubs in temporary housing. When he found out that I was living alone, he started to stalk me. With no close relatives to rely upon, I consulted city officials and the police. That forced me to realize that I had to protect myself.
In the end, I resigned myself to placing a pair of men's shoes that I got from an acquaintance next to mine. This way, it looks as if a couple is living in the house. Almost six years have passed since the disaster. I have since moved out of that temporary housing. However, I still place a pair of men’s shoes at the entrance of my house, and every day I wear a ring that looks like a wedding ring.
