数年前、女川駅が新しく素敵に建てられたというニュースを聞いて、行ってみました。駅前にはおしゃれな商店街が並んでいましたが、その周辺はまだまだ工事現場が広がり大型トラックの土埃が舞っていました。商店街の先に津波で倒された2階建ての女川交番がそのままになって転がっていました。
昨年、女川へ再び行ったときは街も少しずつ整備されて新しい住宅が建ち始めていました。
新しい生活が、新しい思い出が、又ここで作られるんだなぁと未来の街と人々に思いを馳せました。街の方たちの笑顔があふれる街に早く戻ってほしいと思いました。
今、女川交番は復興工事の為に別の場所に移されていて、いずれは震災遺構として元の場所に残されるということです。

Several years ago I heard that a new train station in Onagawa was being built, so I went to see it. In front of the station stood a trendy shopping area, yet all around it were construction projects and big trucks kicking up dust clouds. Just beyond this shopping area was where the two-story Onagawa Police Station had been knocked down by the tsunami.

On another visit to Onagawa last year, I watched the town rebuild itself little by little, as it started construction on a new residential building. Pondering the future of Onagawa and its people, I felt that new lives and new memories could be created here, and that this town could once again be a place for smiling faces.

The Police Station has been moved while the area is undergoing reconstruction, but I hear the wreckage from the original station will be preserved as a reminder of the disaster.
